What's Your Story?

We are looking for Canadian MMTers who have a story to tell about their battle with addiction. How has addiction affected your life and what methadone means to you in your recovery. We are all unique and come from different backgrounds. We all share in the stigma attached to MMT, we hesitate to tell others we are on a program for drug abuse because of the small mindedness and ignorance towards the disease of addiction and methadone maintenance programs.

Your opinion is a valuable tool in the fight to mainstream MMT and make it more accessible to those who need it. Make no mistake; we are in a battle for our lives. There are many people who would like to do away with these programs and send us back to the dark ages.

MMTers in Canada have it a little better than our American counterparts. Currently, we are able to get our prescriptions filled at pharmacies with no dose caps. In Ontario, patients are able to get up to six carries per week, and our prescriptions can be filled by any physician that has taken the course on dispensing and addiction from the College of Physicians and Surgeons (COPS).

Send your stories or comments to canada@atwatchdog.org. I hope that together we can remove the stigma attached to MMT. There is strength in numbers. There is an epidemic of narcotic abuse in Canada. Where does someone turn for help? We need more clinics and understanding Doctors to fight this war for our children. It might be someone you know and love that needs help. I hope they are able to get this lifesaving medicine without all the problems many of us suffer.

Thanks for caring......Gary Robbins--editor for Canadian corner
